With Autism Children May Exhibit A Broad Spectrum Of Signs And Symptoms

By Ted Jennette

With regards to autism kids may exhibit a wide range and spectrum of symptoms. One autistic kid may have very critical symptoms and need full time care for life while another kid with similar diagnosis may be independent and high functioning, with only a few minor signs of this disorder. There are some common signs that may indicate autism though, and three common areas where signs and symptoms show up. If the 3 major developmental areas are affected then autism is usually diagnosed.

For a determination of autism to be reached the kid should be impaired in social interaction, the verbal and nonverbal communication should be significantly affected, and there are patterns and repetitive manners that affect the interests and activities of the child. When all of these areas have symptoms then the physician or specialist may diagnose autism with full confidence. Each kid is individual and unique, and will have specific symptoms and behavior patterns that must be evaluated.

With autism children can fall anywhere on the very intensive spectrum that makes up this medical condition. Often kids with serious forms of the problem may not communicate with others at all, and it is common for these kids to lack empathy or display emotion. Several children with this disorder do best in a structured environment with a rigid schedule and set activities that are expected.

Lots of autistic kids experience stress and anxiety if an unexpected event happens or the daily routine is not followed properly for any reason. This may result in an outburst from the kid because of the bad feelings experienced. A few autistic children don't respond to touch at all and don't seem to feel a need to touch others, even guardians and other family members. Impaired connection is evident in all cases of autism, but the level of impairment in this area can differ from one case to the next.

In so many cases these kids will grow up to be dependent adults who must be provided for, but this is not always real. A few autistic kids can manage many tasks and have a small degree of social skills available.
